Ishikawa Ongakudo:Bringing Music Culture to the Future

Ishikawa Ongakudo serves a venue to allow both Japan’s and Europe’s many centuries of musical tradition to transcend existing boundaries, for innovative new encounters. The prefecture of Ishikawa boasts its own history of arts and culture, with a tradition of hogaku, or classical Japanese music, that extends back to the days of the feudal Kaga Domain. Since the Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa was founded in 1988, it has served as a collaboration between these different musical cultures. Ishikawa Ongakudo features three unique venues — the Concert Hall with its outstanding acoustics to serve as a home base for the Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, the Hogaku Hall with a variety of stage mechanisms for traditional Japanese performing arts, and the multi-functional Koryu Hall — where the music cultures of both East and West can meet, for cultural exchange to spark the creation of new forms of culture.

Concert Hall

Concert Hall

Rich, Warm Sound and Exquisite Acoustics
With its stately pipe organ, the Concert Hall makes quite an impression, and serves as a resident concert hall for Ishikawa’s own Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa. This classical music hall’s shoe-box design ensures the finest acoustics, and the three acoustic reflectors above the stage can be adjusted to optimize the venue for any type of performance, from piano recitals to chamber music, or even full orchestras, to deliver moving, unforgettable music experiences through exceptional acoustics.

A Beautiful Space for Traditional Performing Arts
With its vermilion-red walls, arched ceiling, and all-hinoki-cypress stage, the Hogaku Hall transports all who set foot inside it to the world of classical Japanese music. The stage equipment includes a mawari butai revolving stage featuring twelve built-in lifts of various sizes, and a movable hanamichi walkway through the audience, making the venue perfect for authentic performances of kabuki, buyo dances, nagauta singing, sankyoku chamber music, and more. This compact, intimate space allows audience members to practically hear the performers’ breathing, creating the sense that they could almost reach out and touch the stage.

Koryu Hall

Koryu Hall

A Creative Space for Cultures to Meet
Koryu Hall offers a creative space adjacent to Kanazawa Station’s underground plaza. The huge adjustable fence partition can be raised or lowered to create or remove the boundary between rooms, connecting rooms on both the first floor and the first basement for a 520 m² space. The open stage can be made accessible from the first floor, as well — the hall offers a variety of flexible options to arrange the space. The stage area features a stage lift divided into nine segments, and the floor can be set up with a tiered layout that connects the first floor and the first basement. Enjoy the incredible freedom of options this hall offers.
